Ammonium lauryl sulfate is a surfactant (like SLS and SLES).

It is a prefect foundation for cleaning solutions (shampoos, soaps, lotions) because of the way it eliminates the hydrogen bondings in water based solutions. The result the in modified water, with low surface tension, that easily penetrates fibers or hair or teeth.

Is Ammonium lauryl sulfate safe?

In higher concentrations this compound may lead to strongest irritation of skin and eyes. Inhalation may lead to serious irritation of the breathing passages. Deglutition of Ammonium lauryl sulfate may also lead to irritation of throat and bowels.

These dissatisfactions included: scalp itches, allergic reactions, hair damage and loss of vision.

The Cosmetic Ingredient Review reported that sodium and ammonium lauryl sulfates “appear to be safe in formulations designed for discontinuous, brief use followed by thorough rinsing from the surface of the skin. In products intended for prolonged use, concentrations should not exceed 1%.”

Amounts of ASL below 1% in cleansing agents are ,in general, not irritating while concentration that is more than 10% may cause moderate to strong irritation of skin.
